Phoenicia is a dinky little restaurant in the Stater Brothers Center on Barton Road at Alabama. The decor is very basic, a kitchen grill behind the counter to place your order. It has a few tables in front and on the side. The owner is usually behind the grill and a nice lady takes your order. You can watch the chef prepare all of the food. I am not very knowledgeable in matters of middle eastern food. When in Turkey I went to Harry's Bar for my grub and usually would order a "Chicken Gyro" at middle eastern restaurants in Asia. Ordering at Phoenicia is a new experience. It is the first time I had tasted humas.
Now that I am older and wiser would like to expand my culinary horizons, I usually order the standard Gyro at Phoenicia, got adventurous once and ordered the Falafel plate. The Falafel was not one of my favorites, it consisted of large crispy balls of an undetermined substance served with pita bread and humas. It was my first time ordering Falafel and could be an acquired taste, this dish is very popular with vegetarians. The Gyro Plate for $7.95 is served a huge Gyro, two extra pita bread, Greek sauce, lettuce and tomatoes. The Greek sauce was served over the lettuce and tasted of parsley. It was also served with humas, a smooth garbanzo bean paste flavored with sesame sauce. It is more than I can eat at one setting. Phoenicia also serves a Gyro Combo with fries and a soda at $6.49 and the sandwich alone is $4.25.
Also on the menu
Shawarma Beef or Chicken $4.95 and $8.95 for the plate.
Falafel $3.95 and $6.95
Beef or Chicken Kabob $4.25 and $9.95
Kufta Kabob $4.25 and $8.95
Grape Leaves $8.95
Phoenicia has many more items on the menu. The owner is very amiable the service is friendly. Phoenicia is busy but have always been able to find a table. I want to return and try some of the other menu items but not the Falafel. The good news is they are opening a second location in the Trader Joe's Center on Orange Street. I recommend Phoenicia for a good lunch or dinner.
