I developed a taste for Vietnamese food while working in the San Gabriel Valley. I had a Vietnamese lunch buddy and we hit most of the restaurants and cafes in the area.

This was my first visit to Pho Mai. It is very near Pho Ha, a more popular Vietnamese Restaurant. Pho Mai is located in a strip mall on Waterman near the intersection of Mill Street. I was surprised how nice the décor was, very comfortable and clean, much more upscale than Pho Ha.

The servers here were sweet ladies and very friendly, fast and efficient. Pho (soup) has tripe as an ingredient, I usually order a chicken Pho to avoid the odd bits of intestine and gristle.

I ordered the #5 Pho Tai Nam Gaa, it is supposed to consist of broth, rice noodles, slices of steak, flank, and brisket for $5.50. At Pho Mai the side dish for the Pho includs slices of chili, a large sprig of mint leaves and bamboo spouts. My first time eating Pho did not know what to do with the greens. The custom is to add the leaves and sprouts to your Pho and stir liberally. My Pho's broth had a semi sweet hint, it tasted good. The noodles were cooked perfectly, the meat was tender. When I got near the bottom of the bowl, I started noticing what looked like gristle and some tripe. My bad, guess I need to be more careful in what I order, it was good though and just had a small bit left over.

The waitresses did not seem to speak a whole lot of English. They were, as stated earlier, very accommodating to any requests. I also enjoyed an Iced Vietnamese Coffee. The have a wide selection of other Vietnamese Rice and Noodle dishes. Pho Mai takes cash and has an ATM sign. I would defiantly go back and enjoy the food at Pho Mai again.
